I Have a Dream

Well, I actually have a few of them. But this one keeps recurring, each time more clearly, with more details, every time more intriguing and appealing.

What about? Well, what else could I dream of? Education. But of a different kind of education. And my dream even has a name already: “Outschool”

And in my dream, I see children running around in groups, flowing from one learning sphere to another, looking for answers for the questions engaging them.

In today’s world, it is unreasonable to expect students to find answers to their questions in books, inside a building, facing a blackboard.

In tomorrow’s world, our children might forget there is a world beyond the computer screen; that reality is out there, in nature, in the streets, among people.

In tomorrow’s world, we are going to need thinking people. People linked to one another in real, human ties. We are going to need people who see themselves as part of the world, and responsible for it, and one for another.

In order to achieve all this, we need large numbers of educators, and very few teachers. Our role in the world must change: we must transform ourselves from a source of knowledge to a source of skills and of values; we must go back to being role-models to our students. And role-models exist in life, not in the classroom.

We must take our students by the hand and show them- in real life, in real actions – how to find answers, how to solve problems, how to work together in order to achieve goals.

True, such a thing already exists. If my memory serves me right, it is called a youth movement.

Are these two truly one and the same thing? I’m not sure. We’ll have to wait for the next dream in order to find out…
